Frequently
Asked Questions
If I have done
something illegal or bad in the past, must the clinician report it to the police?
No. In fact,
that information is confidential. It is only if you intend to
harm someone or are currently involved in abuse that the
psychologist must make a report to "protective
services" like the Department of Children and Family
Services.
Although many
people don't understand why a psychologist must not report a
past crime discussed by a patient, it is prohibited because the
person is seeking help and needs to be able to discuss the
fullest nature of their difficulties in order to progress.
Allowing a person to speak to a clinical psychologist without
fear of being reported to legal authorities makes it possible
for the person to get assistance in stopping any current or
future illegal activity that might harm themselves or someone
else.
