Frequently Asked Questions

If I have done something illegal or bad in the past, must the clinician report it to the police?

No. In fact, that information is confidential. It is only if you intend to harm someone or are currently involved in abuse that the psychologist must make a report to "protective services" like the Department of Children and Family Services.

Although many people don't understand why a psychologist must not report a past crime discussed by a patient, it is prohibited because the person is seeking help and needs to be able to discuss the fullest nature of their difficulties in order to progress. Allowing a person to speak to a clinical psychologist without fear of being reported to legal authorities makes it possible for the person to get assistance in stopping any current or future illegal activity that might harm themselves or someone else.
